Day 01: Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park (7 hrs)
|Departing from your Kampala accommodation at 0700hrs, we head off through the capital city of Uganda. Kampala is a bustling market city with a population of just under one million and its narrow streets are often packed full of mini buses, hand drawn carts, motor cycle taxis and even the odd herd of cows.
An early morning start takes us south-west, across the Equator and through savannah grasslands, banana plantations and past herds of Ankole cattle with their incredibly long curving horns.
Driving north we travel through the volcanic formations of the Western Rift Valley towards Queen Elizabeth NP. The descent reveals a stunning panorama of Lakes George and Edward amidst game-filled plains. As one of the outstanding treasures of Uganda, Queen Elizabeth NP has recently been designated a Biosphere Reserve for Humanity under UNESCO.
In an area protected from hunting since the 1920’s and confirmed as a national park in 1952, Queen Elizabeth NP covers over 2,000 sq km of wildlife area which joins Kibale Forest NP and the Rwenzori mountain range to form a huge wildlife corridor. It is the most popular and easily accessible game reserve in Uganda and is home to 95 mammal species, the highest of any Ugandan national park and includes the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha and chimpanzees in Kyambura Gorge. Over 600 bird species have been sighted in Queen Elizabeth NP, making it truly unique for having one of the highest number in the world for such a relatively small reserve.
In the late afternoon we take a game drive through the parks diverse eco-system of grassy plains, tropical forest, rivers, swamps, lakes and volcanic craters. The game drive in this park, with the massive Rwenzoris as a backdrop provides excellent opportunities to view an incredible abundance of wildlife including lion, leopard, elephant, the rare giant forest hog, cape buffalo, elephants, de fassa waterbuck, Uganda Kob, Topi and bush buck.
Day 02: Queen Elizabeth National Park
|Early in the morning we depart to the 16 km and 100 m deep Kyambura Gorge in search of man’s closest relative, the chimpanzee. The gorge protects an isolated forest surrounded for the most part by more open savannah, which means the resident chimpanzee community have a restricted territory and are normally easy to locate.
Accompanied by a guide we climb through tropical forest following the spoor of these wild but habituated creatures as well as a variety of other primates. The sounds of chimps carry through the forest very clearly, so approaching and watching them in their natural habitat is a fantastic wildlife viewing experience.
We return to our accommodation to rest from the heat of day, the early morning starts and just to enjoy and reflect on our surroundings.
In the late afternoon we take a unique 2-hour boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel and into Lake Edward. The trip passes through possibly the highest hippo concentration in Africa and many mammals as well as an abundance of colourful birdlife may be seen drinking at the water's edge. The cruise offers an excellent platform for photography and game viewing.
Day 03: Queen Elizabeth National Park to Kampala (7 hrs)
|Rising early we take another game drive through the park in search of more of the abundant wildlife Queen Elizabeth NP has to offer.
We leave Queen Elizabeth NP and return to Kampala with great memories of our experiences over the previous days. We arrive late in the afternoon. Your accommodation tonight is not included but we can assist you with this booking. Tour services end on arrival at your hotel.
